Make Up For Ever: Foundation Nation Event

I was so happy when I saw the invite for Make Up For Ever's Beauty Blogger brunch event. As a woman of colour, I know how hard it is to find the perfect foundation. I honestly feel like it's always a never-ending battle but that is slowly starting to change.

Most women of colour have to deal with skin issues such as discolouration. Which can make it difficult to find a good foundation.  When you have five different tones on your face,
which tone do you match to?!

Did you know that 73% of women have problems with finding right foundation.
That means that more than half of us are walking around with the wrong foundation!
YIKES!

At the event, we had the opportunity to speak to the amazing Troy Jensen about our skin issues. Troy has worked with many celebrities to give them their signature look.

Like Kim Kardashian's smoky bedroom eyes.

Troy gave me tips on how to get the perfect skin tone as a woman of colour.
Guess what the secret is!!

Colour correctors.

Not specifically the ones the greens and lavender(for me) but one that has an orange in it!

After the event, there were make up artists there to give us our own private foundation makeover. I loved the fact that I was given my own skin profile card to take with me! The skin profile card went over crucial things such as my skin type, my skin tone, my skin undertone and camouflage options (if I needed).

For anyone that's interested,
I was recommended the MUFE 5 Camouflage Cream Palette- No. 4 - for dark skin tones.

Each cream corrector was labelled by number.
Here is what was specifically used:
  • 20 under my eyes
  • 22 like darker areas like around my lips
For the whole face- Pro Finish in 177 was used.

I should also add that this look was done with their new artisan brushes!
Which are so soft. I will have a separate post on them soon.

Do you have a Sephora store near you?

Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation Review- Chestnut

I do not wear foundation daily. I usually wear it on a night out or to an event. Lately my skin has been so oily this Spring. I'm serious! Oil blotters are currently my best friend- I cannot leave home without them but that's a whole other post.

I'm always on a look out for foundations that work well for women of color. I've heard a lot of good things about hourglass foundation but the range only went up to beige and obviously that would not work for my skin tone. When I had the opportunity to review one of the eight new Immaculate shades, I first went to Sephora to get the sample to see which colour worked for me.  I met an awesome sales associate who gave me a very large sample to try out before my bottle arrived.
“Miracle Foundation For Oily Skin” - Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation– just got more miraculous. As you may remember, the liquid to powder formula absorbs oil, camouflages imperfections, and delivers a long-lasting velvet matte finish—without the need for touchups. After an influx of emails from customers claiming Immaculate had improved their skin, we came to the realization that Immaculate was not only helping people with oil-absorption and shine-diffusion, it was also remedying their skin.
I was very happy to see how this foundation held up. I honestly could go hours without having to blot my face and not worry about how I looked. I know that seems small but for someone like me who doesn't wear foundation- I always forget to check up and nothing is worst than going to an event or party and taking pictures and seeing how oily you look. Shoot!! No one could have warned me?!?

Plus the Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder($64.00 CDN) has acne fighting properties. This is perfect for the girls who are afraid to wear foundation because they constantly break out.

You might expect such phenomenal results from a high-tech, acne-fighting skincare product—but from your makeup? Not likely. Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation bridges the gap between skincare and cosmetics with its paradigm-shifting formula. And it does so without resorting to ingredients like salicylic acid, which can lead to dryness and flaking. For women dealing with problematic skin, the idea of a foundation that delivers a flawless matte finish and simultaneously helps clear your complexion is a godsend.

The overall look and texture of the foundation was really nice. I really liked applying it with the stippling brush. It doesn't matter what your skin tone is, if you are from light to a dark deep like myself- I would recommend that you definitely go to Sephora try out the foundations for yourself.

Finding the Right Foundation

I started my blog for anyone who wanted to get into makeup but didn't know where to start. Believe it or not, I found a foundation that perfectly matched my skin tone when I was 24. That was only three years ago. It was actually Make Up For Ever HD foundation in 178. Perfect foundation that works with daylight & harsh flash.

The hardest part in the beginning is trying to find which shade would suit your skin tone. It's always good to start in places which offer samples like Sephora or MAC. Since there is a lot of trial and error at first, it's always good check up on blogs to get an idea of what you want. I can't remember who it was but I seen a Youtuber with a similar skin tone to mine demo the MUFE HD formula. I went into the store and picked up exactly what I wanted.

I can't tell you how many times I have tried a product in store (on my hand), bought it and it was a totally the wrong color! Here are three tips to help you (if you're new to makeup):

  • Find out your undertone.
Are you warm or cool based?
This part is kind of difficult for some. Warm based skin has a yellow undertone. Cool based skin has a blue undertone. I'm a yellow undertone with a little bit of red. Get it? If you don’t pop into the closest department store and someone will definitely help you out. Maybe they can apply it directly to your face.

  • Always swipe the product on the side of your jaw.
Does the product match your skin? If so, congrats you have a match! If it doesn't, keep on trying other brands until you find a suitable product.

  • Find your finish.
This one is truly based on trial and error. I prefer liquid foundation but lately I'm in love with matte powders (with no primer). I love the way how it sets naturally on my skin.
If I'm in a rush I spray it to get the desired look I want.
