Four Tips to Help you Plan your Next Island Vacation

Often times people leave from the comfort of their home for vacation, honeymoon or just to get away. These trips can be stressful, if you have never been to a certain location before.

Uvero Alto, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
I love traveling and I'm lucky to have a partner that feels the same!
These tips will help you take advantage of the good points about travel and prepare you for your trip.

Read everything
I get on tripadvisor before I book ANY vacation.
Make sure that your hotel has a good rating before you book. On tripadvisor, it's very easy to tell which review is a rant vs. facts. Trust your gut and pick a place that has points on your must have list. I stayed at a resort in Uvero Alto, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic which had an adult only section, a swim out pool and butler service. So dreamy! I chose it over an all-ages resort with beachfront properties. Some of you guys might think i'm crazy but I read on tripadvisor that -that particular beach can get plagued with seaweed in the middle of the week...When was I going? In the middle of the week! I saved myself a lot of stress.

Uvero Alto, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Do NOT leave the resort without a tour guide or someone who knows the landscape. I remember going to Jamaica and even though I am Jamaican- I did not venture to parts that I did not know solo. Unless one of my husband or my family members picked me up. Or I was leaving with those massive Tour bus. I was not going. You could be going to the safest place ever but if you do not know the landscape...stick to what you know. Hotel security is there for a reason. Don't let me start with stories about people getting robbed.

Bottled water is your best friend
And a lot of these other countries purify their water in different ways than North America or Europe. It's 50/50 chance if it will work for your stomach. Nobody has the time to be spending your full vacation on the toilet. Always drink bottled water if you can. I also know that water purifying tablets can be purchased as well, if needed.

Ask a lot of questions & research
Let's bring it all the way back... I have a funny story. A while back on my first vacation in Cuba with some of my friends we signed up for an excursion which included driving a car. We all drive automatic cars- so we had nothing to worry about. We asked our rep if the car was automatic- he assured us that it was. Once we got there, we realized that it ONLY manual cars. There were NO automatic cars available on site. To make things worse.. nobody in our group knew how to comfortably drive a manual car- except my friend's boyfriend who only had two lessons.

Probably one of the most dangerous drives that I have ever been on. We all could have been dangerously hurt! This could've been totally avoided by doing some research online.

Things are much different now that I don't live with my parents. I won't lie, I was lucky being a princess. I hardly paid for anything so I saved a lot of money. Which is a complete 360 now because everything requires money!

Earlier on in my marriage, one of my secrets to saving money was Groupon coupons. It was one of the best things that I used to regulate my spending. Have you heard of Teeez cosmetics before?
I actually seen the kiosk downtown in The Bay last year.
I swatched a few lipsticks and liked the consistency but didn’t get to explore the brand further.

I got another opportunity to play at the NKPR Spring 2017 event.
I demo-ed the highlighters and fell in love!

What do you look for in a highlighter?
Like.. what criteria is needed to make a good highlighter????
I look for highlighters that:
A) Show up on my skin
As a darker skinned woman, I need something will show up and not look like a silvery mess or non-existent.
B) Easy to work with
Do I have to swirl my brush 100 times to pick up some colour?? Or does it apply streaky? If so, I don’t want it.
C) Unique
Am I excited to use it? Do I want to tell my friends or readers to read about it?<- VERY IMPORTANT

Well these Teeez Cosmetics style addict highlighters have all the above.
First off, I've never seen a highlighter apply so smoothly but still show up when u blend it.

Best way to apply these highlighters?
I'd recommend two ways.
1) A synthetic brush because they don’t trap liquid products in their bristles.
Try one like this:

Or use your fingers. My personal favourite.
Free :) Or a combination of both.

I received three different colours.
I personally think there is a colour for everyone!

From left to right:
Light- Berlin Sunrise
Medium- Body Heat
Dark/Deep- Smooth Cooper

Which one is your favourite?

My beauty resolution for 2017

Do you do beauty resolutions?
I usually try to do something new yearly but sometimes I fail completely. My beauty resolution for 2017 is pretty simple. It's funny because I preach this to other people all the time but I won't lie... there is that one or two times when I don't do it. Then I regret it because my skin goes haywire!

My resolution will always be to remove your makeup no matter how tired you are. I always use wipes (This is another blog post). But when the wipes run out laziness can kick in.

At the beginning of the year, I actually bought three bags of square cotton pieces to accompany my four bottles of Bioderma. I totally think that could last me through the year without any problems. Bioderma Sensibio H2O micelle solution ($24 for 500 mL)is easy to use. The water cleanses and removes make-up from face and eyes. I wear lash extensions and this is sensitive to use on my lash line.

Just a quick run down of Bioderma for anyone who hasn’t tried this amazing product. If you’re in Canada, it can be found in Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall and Murale. In USA, I know of Beautylish (I think they ship internationally) and Walmart.

A pioneer since the 1970s, BIODERMA has acquired unique expertise by placing biology at the service of dermatology. This original scientific approach relies first and foremost on knowledge of the skin and its biological mechanisms to formulate products directly inspired by them.
They have a vast product range:
Noticeable by it's red & white packaging
    Sensitive skin
Noticeable by it's blue & white packaging
    Dehydrated sensitive skin
Noticeable by it's blue & white packaging
Very dry to atopic sensitive skin
Noticeable by it's green & white packaging
    Oily blemished skin
Noticeable by it's orange, blue, brown & white packaging
    Skin and sun
Noticeable by it's purple & white packaging
    Damaged skin

Five tips to make you more confident when getting your makeup done

I have a confession.
Although, I am a makeup artist- getting my makeup done gives me sight anxiety...Yeah I know.
My main fear is:

What if I don't like it & how I nicely ask someone to change it?

I hate confrontation!
Whenever I do makeup, I'm the type of person who gives you a mirror and asks you questions along the way. I want you to be comfortable and love your look!

But I know it can't be like that in every situation.
Here is a checklist of 5 things to make sure that your appointment goes smoothly.
This list can be very helpful for brides**

Always have a muse & examples of the look you're going for

My muse is Kelly Rowland because we have the same skin tone. I know we don't look alike but she's the perfect person to describe my skin tone and eye shape. If I'm looking for the perfect red- I know I can find a picture of her wearing one for reference. I always try to have three to five images of the look that I am going for. Sometimes saying chocolate smokey eyes isn't enough. Images help a lot.

If possible, ask to see the MUAs work

I know that it's not always available especially if your getting an MUA from a Sephora, MAC or department store. But if you're a bride- this will be very important. You need to see if this MUA's style is something that you vibe with. For example, I know a great MUA who does great work but isn't strong with liquid eyeliner. Or another who is amazing with blending but doesn't contour or highlight. You need someone who will work for you!

Always speak up on your allergies before the MUA gets started

For example- I have a grape allergy and I try to avoid moisturizers/serums that contain that. Also foundation preference- I prefer MUFE or NARS. If my MUA doesn't have it. I bring my own. But I know that's not always possible.

If you don't like your eyebrows darken... SPEAK UP! If you don't wear dark lipstick. SPEAK UP! Also if you have a picture of how you usually wear your makeup. Show that! I do think that it's great to step out of the box but within reason. Which brings me to my last point.

If you don't like it speak up

Always compliment the MUA but say what needs to be changed. For example, "I love the eyes but my blush is too strong- can we tone it down a bit. Work together to find a happy medium!
