How To Determine Your Skin Type

When it comes to choosing the right products for your skin, you always want to make sure that you are choosing the ones which will serve your skin best and produce the best results. For instance, someone who is more combination skin (i.e: oily/dry skin prone), will opt for products that are light and oil free in nature, and include a higher pH acidity to combat the oil in your skin. In order to do this, you have to first determine what your skin type is.

The four skin types are normal, dry, oily and combination.
Here are some handy tricks that will help you figure out your skin type!

Normal
Whew! If you have normal skin, consider yourself extremely blessed! Those who have normal skin do not have skin inflammations or break outs as easily as the other skin types. Typically, the oil distribution on your face is well-balanced and you won’t tend to have much issues when it comes to dry skin. You also have the added satisfaction of knowing that you can use just about any skin care product there is, without worrying too much about getting a bad reaction. The best skin care regime for this skin type is using mild facial cleansers, light-medium facial lotions, and exfoliating no more than 2-3 times a week. If you want an added glow, look for products that contain AHA, BHA or retinol. Don’t forget to use that SPF! It’s very important to protect your skin from the harsh elements, such as the sun. Opt for any type of sunscreen formula that suits your fancy -- lotions, mists, or powders. The options are endless!

Dry
Those who have dry skin typically notice that they have frequent rough patches of skin, that will appear to be dehydrated, flaky and tight. Although you may not be as prone to acne due to lack of oils in your skin, you will need to obtain the right products that will restore your skin’s moisture and keep your skin richly hydrated. The best skin care regime for this skin type is cleansing oils and lotions, hydrating serums, rich moisturizers, and a creamy sunscreen for the perfect finish. Using cleansing oils and lotions helps to remove excess dirt and makeup without stripping away your skin’s moisture. Hydrating serums and essences will ensure that your skin feels and looks quenced, with the added benefit of water. Rich moisturizers that contain oils and shea butter are also great for this particular skin type, because it helps to lock in the moisture your skin needs in order to prevent it from drying out. Lastly, having a creamy sunscreen gives your skin the added benefit of protecting you against UV rays, while it moisturizes.

Oily
If you’ve got oily skin, you will notice right away that your skin tends to produce quite a bit of oil. Usually within the first two hours after your regular cleansing routine, you will see that your skin is extremely shiny. This happens because the skin glands become overactive, thus producing more oil than those with normal prone skin. This can also occur whenever you get extremely stressed, going through hormonal imbalances or get super sweaty. All of these symptoms can lead to the rise in breakouts on different parts of your face. The best thing to do for this skin type is to make sure to stay far away from products that contain oils. In this case, oil-free is the way to go baby! You also want to make sure that the cleansers you use are not overly harsh, because that can cause oil build up. It’s best to choose cleansing products that are both gentle and soap free. To treat your skin from clogged pores and acne, opt for an exfoliator that will not only treat your clogged pores, but also wash away dead skin cells. When it comes to moisturizing your skin, be sure to use cream and gel products that offer lightweight and water-based ingredients to help balance the hydration in your skin. Lastly, when it comes to your sunscreen, you should choose the product that will protect your skin from damage but also have oil-wicking components.

Combination
Ahh! This is my favourite skin type! I’m sure you may be wondering why. Well, I actually have this skin type so I definitely know what it can feel like. Also, word on the street is this is the most common skin type. We usually get the best of both worlds, in that there are some places on our face (such as the t-zone), that may be more oily prone than other areas. Often, we’ll also get those times when we notice our skin having dry spots. Normally, the places that contain more oil are where your oil glands are mostly distributed and drier in areas that lack it. A big tip with this type of skin type is to err on the side of not over cleansing your skin. Make sure to keep a balanced skin regime where you are washing your skin about twice daily, and ensuring that you choose a light, oil-free moisturizer on the places where your skin appears most dry. Also, be sure that your cleanser contains a more mild PH acidity to balance out your skin. When it comes to the cleanser that you use, make sure that it is balanced and contains a gentle formula to help tackle skin irritation and dryness. In terms of treating your skin, you can opt for a hydrating serum and your favourite mattifier that can be applied specifically to your T-zone area. When you moisturize, use lightweight liquid or gel lotions, and choose an oil-free based sunscreen to prevent your skin from becoming extra glossy.

  1. I have extremely oily skin and being in the heat of Brazil doesn't help at all. My skin was perfect before but I think the water here makes my skin so dry. Going to use these tips to see if I can get my skin back to normal!
