My Thoughts about Hairsprays + Herbal Essences Biorenew

This post is going to be so awkward because it’s about a product that is so known to everyone but I just don't embrace it. Here it goes. I hardly use hairspray. I don’t know if it’s laziness (probably laziness) but it’s just a step I always look over.

I spent a lot of time on my curls, whether it be with heat or Flexi rods… but with the heat and humidity of the environment they don't last. By the end of the day I’m rocking a semi-straight style- that I didn’t ask for…

Let’s go back to the root of the problem…Why do I hate hairsprays? We all know the hairsprays of the past. They’re heavy and not workable at all. Like I just remember those up-do’s that were sprayed to the high heavens and did not move. Like a week later you would see the person in the same style and a curl hasn't budged…that is not for me. Lies… it happened once and NO I won’t share pictures LOL. Just bad vibes all over.

For me to start using hairspray, I have three requirements.
• It has to be flexible
• Not sticky
• Doesn’t dry out my hair

I truly feel like that is not a lot to ask for…

Anyways.. I had planned this fun girls night a few weeks back with required. Big bouncy curls. The only problem is that it was a really hot day and I know that my curls would NEVER last the 30 minute car ride. I recently received the Herbal Essences Biorenew Flexible Hairspray ($7.99 Walmart CANADA) from my Beauty United Mailer. And thought it was a good idea to break it out.

Here are the results:

An hour later…Not bad eh!
First thing I appreciated was how my hair STILL had movement and wasn’t weighted down.

Three cool things that I found out about the Herbal Essences Biorenew Flexible Hairspray:

• Made with a blend of antioxidants, aloe plus bamboo
• Has NO parabens, gluten or alcohol
• Flexible with a manageable hold.

TREND: Bomber Jackets

You don't have to be a high school jock to enjoy the bomber jacket trend.
They're fashionable, come in various prints/colours and are pretty affordable.

I got my first bomber jacket when I was in high school. I literally wore it until the seams ripped out. Right now, most of my bomber jackets come from Forever21 and Roots.
A variation of a high to low price points.

Just quick history lesson because I know you are all dying to know how/where they came from. They started off being casual jackets for pilots in World War l. Combating cold in the cockpit. Fast forward to the present.... You know good ole pop-culture took it over and made it a cult classic.

I actually found this jacket in the sale section at Forever 21

Lise Watier Cosmetics: Rouge Intense Suprême SWATCHES

I'm always talking about how I need to highlight some more Canadian companies.
Especially ones who are doing amazing things!
Honestly have been sitting on these pretty lipsticks for a while….but it's time that you experience the greatness that is Lise Watier Cosmetics: Rouge Intense Suprême ($27 CAN).

These lipsticks actually come in 15 different shades. I know this is corny but these lipsticks were definitely “love at first swatch”. They apply effortlessly! No dragging! No tugging! When I first applied them they literally glided along my lips. You guys know I'm queen of matte lipsticks but these were a lovely surprise from my usual.

Three main selling features for me are:

• The colours are super rich and pigmented.
Even though I have pigmented lips (naturally) one swipe is all I needed.

• The colours are long-lasting.
Even after eating/talking throughout the day the colour was still on my lips. Almost like a “stain”. Which is awesome! I think that this would be perfect for brides or anyone going to a special event who wants something a bit more than a matte lipstick.

• Lastly it's super hydrated.
As I'm actually typing this.. I am slowly smacking my lips together and it's such a good feeling. These lipsticks are actually infused with Labrador tea extract. This is very important because this is an exclusive agent in this Lise Watier Cosmetics lipstick.

Let me add a bonus. I love the fact that they come in a magnetic casing. Sometimes I have a lipstick in my bag and with all the moving around the cap comes off. Then I go in to reach for something and my bag is full of lipstick marks! Not what you want to see you in a $400 bag… I can tell you right now.

Days when I'm feeling that I need something bold and exotic I go for Caroline.

Days when I want something soft and feminine I go for Kelly.
To showcase this lipstick, I used a deep brown to line my lips.

So ladies what colour is your favourite here?

How I cleared my skin up last year!

My skin care story hasn't always been that smooth. Pun *intended* I had really clear skin up until my early 20's. When I hit my middle 20's it got a little rocky. I didn't have extreme breakouts like some people I know but it was enough to make me feel self conscious. In 2016, was probably my best year skin care wise. Here are the four main factors which I think changed everything.

I was introduced to two brands: Cerave and OleHenriksen. This really gave me the opportunity to toggle between gentle and more "aggressive" skin care. Cleansers: Anything foaming was my favourite. CeraVe foaming facial cleanser ($14.97 CAN) was super gentle but effective. Also fragrance free!

I think using a toner has changed my life for the better. Ole Henriksen Fountain of Truth Facial Water ($28.00 CAN) is the truth! A toner is used to replenish nutrients/minerals back into the skin after removing makeup and cleansing. Back in the day, I use to apply it to a cotton ball and apply it. Now- two mists and I'm ready to GO! Let it soak in. Then apply serum/ moisturizer.

💦 water
I've upped my water intake.
Thanks to my husband for the awesome Starbucks Tumblr ($22.95 US)

Aggressively treat
As a blogger, I've had the opportunity to get some amazing facials. One of my best facials was from surprise....surprise OleHenriksen. You guys know as a wife and business owner I don't have the time to always step out and visit a spa but the Power Bright™ 3-Step Professional Brightening System ($66.00 CAN) This amazing! So easy but effective.

I think my next steps will be spot lightening but I need to do more research to see what will work for me without bleaching my skin. Do you have a spot lightening treatment that is your fave?

New Real Techniques Sponges that you need in your makeup stash!

I know that you have read about my love/hate relationship with makeup sponges. My stance hasn't changed- I'm still #teammakeupsponges. I love finding new shapes and ways to use them. I have been posting these new Real Techniques sponges on my Spicedbeautyblog instagram account and I have been getting a lot of questions and request to post them on the blog!

Real Techniques Miracle Mini Eraser Sponge ($10.49 CAN)

How small and cute are these! They're marketed as mini eraser sponges.
I virtually don't think that there is one use for them.
The directions suggest that they be used to clean up makeup mishaps.

There are many ways:
  1. Remove eye shadow fallout.
  2. Wipe away eyeliner crazy liner mishaps.
  3. Remove mascara smudges.
  4. Wipe away excess shadow, blush or highlighter.

But...I love using them to apply concealer in the corner of my nose and under my eyes.
Always damp.. never dry.

Real Techniques Miracle Sculpting Sponge ($10.49 CAN)

This sponge is intended create shadows or highlight. Let me break it down a bit. This might make sense for my heavy foundation wearers. Have you ever put on your foundation/powder and thought that your face looked like a pancake. This product is going to help you apply those natural shadows back into place. Get it? Can be used with powders, creams, and liquids.

I'm new to baking** and hardly do it BUT when I do it.
Using that long flat end it apply the powder is AMAZING!

Have you tried any of the new Real Techniques Sponges yet?

Let me add..... To maintain hygiene replace your sponge every 1-3 months.

Currently Obsessed: Nivea’s Creme Care Facial Cleansing Wipes

I don’t think I will ever not be obsessed with makeup wipes. They’re convenient and easy to use. Although I have so many makeup-removing methods to choose from melting cleansers to soaked cotton squares…nothing does the trick like wipes.

It’s been a while since I found a brand that I really liked. Right now, Nivea’s Creme Care Facial Cleansing Wipes are doing the job. Let me tell you all why it works for me!

Available at major retailers, grocery and drugstores for $8.99 CAN.

I can’t speak for everyone but I love doing this little trick with my wipes. Since I don’t wear foundation daily- I rip them in half and fold them in half again. I concentrate using them mainly on my brows and under eyes (first). Then use the other side on rest of my face. I use a waterproof eyeliner daily on my lower lids and I find this quite gentle on my waterline. **One of the most sensitive areas when it comes to my makeup removal. When I use the Nivea wipes I don’t need to scrub it off like when I use some of my bulk cheaper wipes. I won’t name any names…Haha!

On days when I have a full face(Mostly days when I got out), I use the full wipe for an easy clean.
No need to wash your face after!

Even on days when I wear no makeup, I like to use these just to refresh. Just to remove oil and all those other yucky impurities. Again need to cleanse off with water *If you don’t want to*. NIVEA Creme Care Complex helps you protect your skin’s moisture balance! Meaning that using this your skin doesn’t dry your skin out.

So that’s why I’m current obsessed with Nivea’s Creme Care Facial Cleansing Wipes!

Have you ever tried Nivea wipes before?

MAKE UP FOR EVER Star Lit Powder + Swatches

Do you remember in 2009 when pigments were the biggest thing? I remember getting those large containers and hardly making a dent in the jar. Then people started to press them and the hype of pigments kinda died down...

Fast forward to 2017 and I have seen the use of pigments/powders starting to get popular again. My favourite look is a smokey eye with some gold pigment patted on top. Or maybe even a metallic green. So many options!!!

Last month, when I went to a MUFE master class and these MAKE UP FOR EVER star lit powders ( $25.00 CAN) popped up in front of me. I fell in love!!

An ultra-fine shimmering powder that catches light to highlight eyes, lips and cheeks.

These things popped into my head......
  • Hygienic
  • Manageable
  • Multipurpose

As an MUA, I've seen some random things.
I remember when someone stuck their finger into one of my mini pot lip colours... EWWW!
It reminded me of high school when one person use to have a vaseline jar and I'd see several people sticking their fingers in it.. Products like this eliminate situations like that.
The hole in the middle is pretty small. I just tap a little on my metal palette and thats all I need.

Back to my conversation about those big jars of pigment that were overwhelming and never were finished. These smaller jars are much more manageable. Plus they take up less space. Eight shades to chose from.

It can be used anywhere- eyes, lips and face.
These powders are extremely finely milled and can be applies wet/dry.
Mix some clear gloss with it to amplify your look!

My love/hate relationship with Makeup Sponges

I'm going to admit something....All of my brushes are collecting dust right now. My obsession with makeup sponges are not dying anytime soon. The typical slope shape is not the norm anymore. You remember those $1.00 for a bag? I still see them at dollarama!
Now i've seen every shape- eggs, spheres and diamonds...

Let me tell you all why I have the perfect love/hate relationship with makeup sponges:
Love because...
Quick Clean
I use my sponges moist. So it doesn't matter if it's dry when I apply my makeup.
I actually use Philosophy 'Purity Made Simple' One-Step Facial Cleanser to clean it when i'm in a rush.

Latex free
Girls with allergies to certain natural bristles (a.k.a animal hair)- yes it's possible....
Here is a latex-free option.

Unique shapes
You need something to get between the side of your nose??
I know a sponge.

Dewy application
A damp sponge application can give u that summer dew glow in the driest of times.

I seen people do a whole face using the curves and angle of a sponge. This is totally different than anyone who uses 6-10 brushes to complete a look.

Now the "hate"...
Can rip
I murdered my Beauty Blender within the second week of owning it.
I didn't understand the be gentle which washing thing.... yikes.

Absorbs foundation
This sucks but it's a sponge...of course some foundation gets wasted.

It doesn't dry quickly (not a problem for me though) because I have so many sponges.

What about you?

Limited-Edition Mary Kay Glossy Lip Oil

I'm ready for Spring. Like really READY. I'm sooo tired of wearing this big jacket everywhere and not being able to show off my pedi (first world problems). I have been playing around with a lot of Spring makeup daily. Mary Kay was one of the first companies to kick off Spring for me. The first thing that caught my eye was the Limited-Edition Glossy Lip Oil.

This innovative lip oil provides a comfortable application with a non-sticky, luminous shine.
If you follow me on instagram- I got a really good response from everyone regarding the colours.
Left to right:
Sheer Pink
Magenta Ray
Brilliant Violet

Typical squeeze tube with slated "fluffy" tip for application.

PRO- It looks like there is a lot of product in the tube.

Now the interesting part. The term lip oil...
I need to revise that term in my head...
These are made with grapeseed, avocado and jojoba oils but it's not the
viscosity of olive oil or sunflower oil.
I would describe this as more as a creamy lip colour.

BUT.. that doesn't mean that the product isn't a good one.
For me (and others like me), it just means don't expect the texture/feeling of an oil because it gives you a totally different vibe.

Wearing- Brilliant Violet

Pigmentation wise...It's good. I will admit for me. 2/3 colours are not for me.
But I can totally see them being more flattering on a light/medium skin tone.

What do I do with my Wedding Guests?

I actually got an email from a reader (Hi Cindy!) regarding a wedding situation. I thought it would be perfect to share on here because you never know what someone else is going through.

Her Question-
I'm getting married in April and I'm unsure what to do. The ceremony and venue is far. It's Hamilton. I'm not from there and none of my fam is from there. I have a gap in the middle where I take pictures and do an outfit change. Do I book a few hotel room for a every to stay in? I have no idea what to do.

When I got married, I was in the same position.. kind of. And I had to learn this on my own to let your guests think for themselves. As a bride, it's so easy to get wrapped up in so many different situations. I'm the type of person that honestly does not want to inconvenience anyone and I will look for ideas to make other people happy.... Which usually end up  with me sacrificing my time or things blowing up in my face.

For example, I had a 90 minute gap in between the church to the reception for me to take photos and I was so freaked out how would my guest from the east end feel with the break in the middle. Guess what? They all found a way to occupy themselves! Some went to a park, others when to a coffee shop and some had already planned out staying at a hotel in the area. Don't stress out. Trust me it will all work out.

Do you have any advice for Cindy?

Four Tips to Help you Plan your Next Island Vacation

Often times people leave from the comfort of their home for vacation, honeymoon or just to get away. These trips can be stressful, if you have never been to a certain location before.

Uvero Alto, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
I love traveling and I'm lucky to have a partner that feels the same!
These tips will help you take advantage of the good points about travel and prepare you for your trip.

Read everything
I get on tripadvisor before I book ANY vacation.
Make sure that your hotel has a good rating before you book. On tripadvisor, it's very easy to tell which review is a rant vs. facts. Trust your gut and pick a place that has points on your must have list. I stayed at a resort in Uvero Alto, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic which had an adult only section, a swim out pool and butler service. So dreamy! I chose it over an all-ages resort with beachfront properties. Some of you guys might think i'm crazy but I read on tripadvisor that -that particular beach can get plagued with seaweed in the middle of the week...When was I going? In the middle of the week! I saved myself a lot of stress.

Uvero Alto, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Do NOT leave the resort without a tour guide or someone who knows the landscape. I remember going to Jamaica and even though I am Jamaican- I did not venture to parts that I did not know solo. Unless one of my husband or my family members picked me up. Or I was leaving with those massive Tour bus. I was not going. You could be going to the safest place ever but if you do not know the landscape...stick to what you know. Hotel security is there for a reason. Don't let me start with stories about people getting robbed.

Bottled water is your best friend
And a lot of these other countries purify their water in different ways than North America or Europe. It's 50/50 chance if it will work for your stomach. Nobody has the time to be spending your full vacation on the toilet. Always drink bottled water if you can. I also know that water purifying tablets can be purchased as well, if needed.

Ask a lot of questions & research
Let's bring it all the way back... I have a funny story. A while back on my first vacation in Cuba with some of my friends we signed up for an excursion which included driving a car. We all drive automatic cars- so we had nothing to worry about. We asked our rep if the car was automatic- he assured us that it was. Once we got there, we realized that it ONLY manual cars. There were NO automatic cars available on site. To make things worse.. nobody in our group knew how to comfortably drive a manual car- except my friend's boyfriend who only had two lessons.

Probably one of the most dangerous drives that I have ever been on. We all could have been dangerously hurt! This could've been totally avoided by doing some research online.
